Do not go for Jobs advertised by the HR Dept.

On Craigslist and other internet job posting sites there is this security job scam going around where they use multiple phone numbers calling themselves HR Dept or Human Resource Department .

When You Google the phone number it just leads to other fake job postings from Hr Depart.

Ask yourself these question:

  1. What are they the Human Resource Department for?
  2. why don't they have a website every business in this day and age has a website?
  3. Why don't they have their address posted?
  4. why don't they have one direct number instead of multiple cell phone numbers that may be burner phones?
Also they promise high pay for your first time in security. That is impossible even if you were in a union. You will be lucky to get a job that pays 10 an hour your first time.

All new security guards start with minimum wage.

More than likely these people don't have a address posted because they move around so that the law cant catch them. They set up shop in different places so they can set up and keep scamming people. I advise you only do business with schools that have fair prices and does not have any classes other than what is required by the state. FIRE GUARD CLASSES DO NOT MAKE YOU A FIRE GUARD IF YOU PASS THEM go to How do I get a Fireguard License in NYC for more info on fire guard.

How do I get a Fireguard License in NYC

A fireguard is like a security guard but as a fireguard you have to keep an eye out for things that can be a fire hazard. A security Guard deters crime a fireguard deters fires

To become a fireguard in New York City you have to be currently employed. This is how you will determine what type of fireguard License you will pursue.

You can get a FREE study guide by going to

Ask your supervisor which one would be required.

You can take a preparation class but its  not required by the state and is cheaper to just study the guide on your own.

The cost of the license is $25 but before you go to take the test at 9 Metrotech Plaza in Brooklyn you need a letter of recommendation from your job on the companies letter head that you bring with you.

good luck

How To Avoid Security Guard Job Scams

There are a lot of scams on Craigslist, Newspapers and other job sites. Many security training schools will advertise themselves as A security company who is hiring. they will try to schedule an IMMEDIATE appointment with you and tell you to bring $80- $100 for a “Background Check, Drug Test or Uniform.” However, when you get there, it’s usually a security training school. Many of these scam schools will try to sell you classes that will not be recognized by an employer like, metal detection, and anti terror, and homeland security like you will be trained to be jack Bauer.

YOU ARE ONLY required to have THE 8 HOUR, 16 HOUR, Guard license, and an 8 hour annual each year. If you want extra certifications to help, go for the Fireguard License and CPR/AED training but those are optional.

In YouTube videos I posted I spoke about this one place in particular called Big Apple Security. Since then I have received emails and phone calls on horror stories of how Big Apple Security took people for hundreds of dollars and being told by their employees to just not come back and forget about the money. I am not going to ask for money I just doing what I was trained to do as a Security Officer and that is to observe and report. Ultimately it is up to the reader to show this and other videos to everyone considering Security work before they seek training to save you money.

BEWARE OF SOME COMPANIES WHO ADVERTISE WITH 347, 646 & 917 AREA CODES. Avoid ads for security work with company names like HR department those are usually a fraud. Avoid ads that promise 12 or more starting you never get paid that much starting. AVOID PROMISES OF JOB PLACEMENT OVER THE PHONE. If you perceive that something does not sound right go with your instinct and leave.

According the NYC Department of Consumer Affairs, Upfront fees for a job are a “Red Flag.” If you want a good job you will have to look for it yourself No school has the golden key to a good job you have to go out there and work to find one a lot of times it is who you know after you proven yourself. In fact in the contracts these fraud schools hide in the fine print usually say “we only provide job placement assistance. Obtaining the actual job is the client’s responsibility.” Before you go to these schools always check if they have complaints go to sites like

If you have been scammed please report to:
Thomas P. Canning
NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services
Office of Public Safety Associate Training Technician (Police)
4 Tower Place
Albany, NY 12203-3764
phone 518-457-3580

If you are looking for legitimate training as a security officer I recommend going to R.E.M.S as they have the best prices by far.
8 Hour Pre-Assignment Course $40
16 Hour On-The-Job Training Course $80.00
8 Hour Annual In-Service Course $40.00
They do charge to do the paper work for your license.

I found another complaint that someone posted on craigslist.

big apple security scam (Manhattan)

Date: 2012-05-17, 8:35PM EDT

I had an interview for a job offered in Jersey city. I thought it a bit of that the interview was in Manhattan for a Jersey job but o well. I showed up and was almost instantly asked for 90 dollars for a Sora class. I said i'm already certified in Jersey and if the job is in Jersey I don't need a NY license. the woman said I need double certification cause the office is in NY I told her she can lick nuts and I left. Don't fall for the scam. Also, a little tip. No company can certify you to use a night stick or baton any that offers is a scam you need a gun license just to carry a baton in Jersey.

I just contacted Mr Burgess owner of big apple security I told him I literally had all the training and he was still going to charge me $75 for what!!! He couldn't explain to me what the fee was for. If the advertised as a staffing agency and a training school I would understand but they have people coming in to interview for jobs he doesn't have. taking advantage of the poor broke people. Instead of going after the rich. Yeah cause massa has him trained. Expose these crooks and together we will clean up the industry.
