Big Apple Security Becomes two new schools

If you follow this blog you already know that Big Apple Security was the first school I exposed on this blog with their unethical business practices.

In an effort to keep an eye on these people to make sure they can't come back and screw more people. I googled the numbers of the defunct Big Apple Security and discovered that two of the number are being used by two new Security Guard Schools.

The Two schools are:

  1. Diamond Security Protection Inc 69-27 Myrtle Avenue Glendale, NY 11385 (718) 418-5557
  2. Prime Security Training & Placement 35 Journal Square Jersey City, NJ 07306 201-668-9417
I haven't been able to find any dirt on Diamond Security Protection, Inc. YET! So IF you went through them and they trained you less than 8 hours or 16 hours for your certification they have stolen from you. Also the state is cracking down on these scam school that are not training people properly are getting their licenses revoked. So if they get their license revoke that will make your certificate worthless and you will have to come out your pocket for another class. Please email me with any information about this business.

If you are trying to become a security officer in New Jersey I suggest you stay away from Prime Security Training & Placement because no one can guarantee you a job. Especially Mr. Burgess who has a history of screwing people here in NYC. Back in 5/18/2012 I contacted Mr Burgess owner of big apple security I told him I literally had all the training and he was still going to charge me $75 for what!!! He couldn't explain to me what the fee was for. If the advertised as a staffing agency and a training school I would understand but they have people coming in to interview for jobs he doesn't have. taking advantage of the poor broke people. Instead of going after the rich. Yeah cause massa has him trained. Expose these crooks and together we will clean up the industry.

A.G. Schneiderman Reaches Settlement With NYC Security Guard Training Company That Scammed Unemployed Consumers

Company Posted Phony Job Listings, Made False Promises Of Employment To Trick Consumers Into Paying For Expensive Training Courses

Schneiderman: This Settlement Permanently Prohibits Company From Advertising Employment Opportunities Or Conducting Security Guard Classes In New York

NEW YORK – Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman today announced that his office had reached a settlement with 1st Security Prep and Placement, a large New York City security guard training school, and its owner Allen Haft, directing as much as $100,000 to unwitting victims who paid for expensive job training courses and were falsely promised jobs in return. The Office of the Attorney General sued 1st Security, located at 250 West 40th Street, and Allen Haft in New York State Supreme Court in April 2013 and obtained a temporary restraining order shutting the school down and freezing its assets. Since the temporary restraining order was issued, 1st Security has ceased to operate.

The settlement, which resolves the litigation against 1st Security and Allen Haft, permanently enjoins 1st Security and Mr. Haft from advertising or offering employment opportunities or employment placement assistance and from offering to sell, selling or conducting security guard or other safety-related training in New York. The settlement also turns over the nearly $100,000 in frozen funds to the Attorney General, which will be used to refund victims of 1st Security’s unlawful practices, and covers penalties, costs, and fees.

“Phony job listings lured thousands of vulnerable, unemployed New Yorkers into believing they would obtain work after paying for expensive training courses. In fact, this company’s whole operation was a scam,” Attorney General Schneiderman said. “This office will not tolerate individuals or companies who make false promises to deceive the public into paying for inferior products.”

The Attorney General’s Office conducted an undercover investigation of the company revealing that it had posted hundreds of fake security guard job listings online on Craigslist and in newspapers including the New York Post, Metro, amNewYork, and the New York Daily News. The advertisements made it seem like the company was hiring employees at high hourly wages when in fact the company was selling inferior training courses.

When consumers responded to the ads, 1st Security falsely promised them that they had been selected for a position but told applicants that before they could start working, they had to complete a series of security guard training courses, typically at a cost of $449 to $667.

After consumers paid for and completed 1st Security’s training courses, they met with 1st Security’s placement office and were given worthless “referrals” to security guard companies -- instead of the promised jobs. When consumers followed up on the referrals, they were not hired for any positions usually because the companies were not hiring or were not interested in hiring individuals with no experience, who had not registered to work as a security guard.

If you were a victim of 1st Security’s scheme, please call the Office of the Attorney General’s helpline at 1.800.771.7755 or file a complaint form, available here. The amount of restitution received by individual consumers will depend on how much money victims paid to the company, as well as the number of claims submitted.

This settlement is the latest in a series of Attorney General enforcement actions against phony security guard schools and employment agencies. In September 2011, the Office of the Attorney General was awarded a nearly $4 million judgment in a court action against C.P. International Security and its owner, based on a similar scheme. In July 2013, the Office of the Attorney General indicted two owners of phony employment agency United Care Services for advertising nonexistent jobs to the public, promising that clients who paid for their services would be placed in the nonexistent jobs and stealing money from hundreds of New Yorkers.

The case was handled by Assistant Attorney General Benjamin J. Lee and Supervisory Investigator Andres Rodriguez, under the supervision of Bureau of Consumer Frauds and Protection’s Deputy Bureau Chief Laura J. Levine, Bureau Chief Jane M. Azia and Executive Deputy Attorney General for Economic Justice Karla G. Sanchez.

Call for an INTERVIEW : 212 470 1862
reply by email: msrivera10222@gmail.com

She writes:
A few weeks ago my brother and I saw this ad on the internet, we really wanted a job, so we decided to give them a call. We called them the very same day, and spoke to a  Ms. Rivera. Ms. Rivera told us about the job, the work hours, and how they pay. Ms. Rivera even gave us the schedule of the shifts they had available. Ms. Rivera said that all we need to get started is only $80. Ms. Rivera said that if we have the $80 we can come in the next day.
When we went there the following day and met with a man that works with  Ms. Rivera his name was Mr. Rosa. Mr. Rosa spoke to my brother and I, saying that because my brother didn't have a security license he would have to apply for one, take an 8 hours course, a16 hours course and a fire guard class. For this the cost would be $500. Mr. Rosa said because I already had a Security Guard license, and my 8 hours certificate. I just needed to do the 16 hours course, and the fire guard class that will cost me $300. We didn't have all the money so Mr. Rosa said we could pay part and then we could finish paying once we started working.
Mr. Rosa told my brother that as soon as we pay down part of the money he could start his classes and it's only for three days, and he told me that because I got my licence I would start working by the Wednesday when I pay my part of the money. My brother and I borrowed $300 from our mother and went to pay Mr Rosa so that we could get started. We went and payed him and he told us that we should call him the next day so he could schedule my brother for classes and put me at a work site. The next day we called him and Mr. Rosa said that we should call back he is busy. I tried calling him on many occasions yet he didn't want to answer.
Let me break this down so you will recognize this.

  1. What is the name and address of the business? where are they located? no where in the ad. Any reputable business will have this information.
  2. Where is a website? In 2014 there should be a website?
  3. Up front costs. Always ask what the upfront costs are for? Most Security Guard companies and schools do not charge an entrance fee.
  4. If they are pressuring you leave. Never give your money to someone pushy there are legit schools out there.
  5. Upselling. Making it seem you need to take extra classes that are not required by law to be able to charge more is shadey.
  6. Always google the phone number and check for reviews. No Reviews or Bad Reviews Never do business with them.
What you should be paying for security courses as posted by REMS security training school http://www.securitytraining.com/

8 hour security class - $45
16 hour Security class- $90 I have seen it lower for $70 else where.

For information about getting your fire guard license read my blog post here How do I get a Fireguard License in NYC

In closing if it doesnt feel right back out. Because as soon as you give up the money getting it back might be close to impossible.

Do not go for Jobs advertised by the HR Dept.

On Craigslist and other internet job posting sites there is this security job scam going around where they use multiple phone numbers calling themselves HR Dept or Human Resource Department .

When You Google the phone number it just leads to other fake job postings from Hr Depart.

Ask yourself these question:

  1. What are they the Human Resource Department for?
  2. why don't they have a website every business in this day and age has a website?
  3. Why don't they have their address posted?
  4. why don't they have one direct number instead of multiple cell phone numbers that may be burner phones?
Also they promise high pay for your first time in security. That is impossible even if you were in a union. You will be lucky to get a job that pays 10 an hour your first time.

All new security guards start with minimum wage.

More than likely these people don't have a address posted because they move around so that the law cant catch them. They set up shop in different places so they can set up and keep scamming people. I advise you only do business with schools that have fair prices and does not have any classes other than what is required by the state. FIRE GUARD CLASSES DO NOT MAKE YOU A FIRE GUARD IF YOU PASS THEM go to How do I get a Fireguard License in NYC for more info on fire guard.

How To Avoid Security Guard Job Scams

There are a lot of scams on Craigslist, Newspapers and other job sites. Many security training schools will advertise themselves as A security company who is hiring. they will try to schedule an IMMEDIATE appointment with you and tell you to bring $80- $100 for a “Background Check, Drug Test or Uniform.” However, when you get there, it’s usually a security training school. Many of these scam schools will try to sell you classes that will not be recognized by an employer like, metal detection, and anti terror, and homeland security like you will be trained to be jack Bauer.

YOU ARE ONLY required to have THE 8 HOUR, 16 HOUR, Guard license, and an 8 hour annual each year. If you want extra certifications to help, go for the Fireguard License and CPR/AED training but those are optional.

In YouTube videos I posted I spoke about this one place in particular called Big Apple Security. Since then I have received emails and phone calls on horror stories of how Big Apple Security took people for hundreds of dollars and being told by their employees to just not come back and forget about the money. I am not going to ask for money I just doing what I was trained to do as a Security Officer and that is to observe and report. Ultimately it is up to the reader to show this and other videos to everyone considering Security work before they seek training to save you money.

BEWARE OF SOME COMPANIES WHO ADVERTISE WITH 347, 646 & 917 AREA CODES. Avoid ads for security work with company names like HR department those are usually a fraud. Avoid ads that promise 12 or more starting you never get paid that much starting. AVOID PROMISES OF JOB PLACEMENT OVER THE PHONE. If you perceive that something does not sound right go with your instinct and leave.

According the NYC Department of Consumer Affairs, Upfront fees for a job are a “Red Flag.” If you want a good job you will have to look for it yourself No school has the golden key to a good job you have to go out there and work to find one a lot of times it is who you know after you proven yourself. In fact in the contracts these fraud schools hide in the fine print usually say “we only provide job placement assistance. Obtaining the actual job is the client’s responsibility.” Before you go to these schools always check if they have complaints go to sites like Ripoffreport.com.

If you have been scammed please report to:
Thomas P. Canning
NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services
Office of Public Safety Associate Training Technician (Police)
4 Tower Place
Albany, NY 12203-3764
phone 518-457-3580

If you are looking for legitimate training as a security officer I recommend going to R.E.M.S as they have the best prices by far.
8 Hour Pre-Assignment Course $40
16 Hour On-The-Job Training Course $80.00
8 Hour Annual In-Service Course $40.00
They do charge to do the paper work for your license.

I found another complaint that someone posted on craigslist.

big apple security scam (Manhattan)

Date: 2012-05-17, 8:35PM EDT

I had an interview for a job offered in Jersey city. I thought it a bit of that the interview was in Manhattan for a Jersey job but o well. I showed up and was almost instantly asked for 90 dollars for a Sora class. I said i'm already certified in Jersey and if the job is in Jersey I don't need a NY license. the woman said I need double certification cause the office is in NY I told her she can lick nuts and I left. Don't fall for the scam. Also, a little tip. No company can certify you to use a night stick or baton any that offers is a scam you need a gun license just to carry a baton in Jersey.

I just contacted Mr Burgess owner of big apple security I told him I literally had all the training and he was still going to charge me $75 for what!!!
